New research from the University of Sheffeld in the UK found that the human hair can actually deter bed bugs from biting, according to Medline Plus.
The researchers studied 29 people and had them shave one arm and leave the other as is. They discovered that the bed bugs have a tougher time finding skin when there is hair in between the bug and skin. It also allows the person to detect if a bed bug is on their skin before they start biting, according to the news source.
"The hairs have nerves attached to them and provide us with the ability to detect displacement," said co-author profession Michael Siva-Jothy. "By forming a barrier and providing detection these hairs prolong search time and make detection more likely because the bug has to spend more time clambering over them."
According to Medline Plus, bed bugs hide in crevices in the wall, carpet or mattress. Those who are attempting to get rid of bed bugs may want to contact professional help and in the meantime, they may want to purchase mattress covers to trap the little insects.
