Researchers from North Carolina State University recently discovered some information about bed bugs - they have a unique genetic quality in the sense that they are not affected by inbreeding, according to The Associated Press.
"We kept discovering the same thing. Within a given apartment, or even a given building, there was extremely low genetic diversity," researcher Coby Schal told the news source. "In most cases there's just a single female that founded the population."
This finding is not a good one in terms of getting rid of bed bugs completely. If there are only a few bed bugs left after an attempted extermination or treatment method, they can grow in numbers rather quickly, the media outlet reports.
According to the Mayo Clinic, these little insects are approximately the size of an apple seed, reddish brown and flat. To prevent these bed bugs, you may want to invest in mattress covers, which can trap them until professional help arrives or keep them at bay. Also, washing and drying linens in high temperatures can kill them.
