To raise awareness of bedbugs in the small town of Port Hope in Ontario, Canada, the Pine Ridge Health Unit is holding a free public meeting, according to The Northumberland News. A public health inspector and pest control experts will be on hand to teach those in attendance about bed bugs, and how to prevent, identify and get rid of them.
"Bed bugs are not just a big city problem, as they have become more prevalent in different settings and communities right across Ontario," Atul Jain, the environmental health manager of the unit, told the news source. "While the though of bed bugs may make our skin crawl, they are more of a nuisance than a public health risk, as they do not transmit disease. Bed bug infestations are not the sign of a dirty home. Even the cleanest homes, apartments and hotels can have bed bugs."
If you find bed bugs in your home, the best thing to do is to handle it immediately. Call an exterminator or the building's landlord if you rent and put furniture covers on the beds to prevent the infestation from spreading. These will also allow you to rest without fear of being bitten while you take steps to get rid of the pesky insects.
