Even with the resurgence of bed bug infestations across the county, a number of people are still unaware of the exact implications of having bed bugs in their home, and it is up to the various pest management companies to ensure that the homeowners are informed, according to Pest Control Technology.
"In our information age, customers have more access to information than ever before. Some of it is good, some is just inaccurate," Michael Merchant, professor and extension urban entomologist at Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Dallas, told the news source.
Merchant added that almost half of the public, who responded to a survey, believed that bed bugs spread disease, which is not the case, the media outlet reports.
According to the Mayo Clinic, bed bugs are approximately the size of an apple seed, are reddish-brown and flat. They feed off human blood and leave itchy, red bumps. Those who are trying to get rid of bed bugs may want to purchase a mattress encasement, which can keep them at bay.
