The Messner Home in Lexington, Virginia, is the home to a number of veterans, but it was recently inspected and a bed bug infestation was found among other problems. However, the owner of the property stands by his facility, as it houses a number of mentally ill veterans, according to the Herald-Leader.
"The Lexington VA Medical Center is committed to ensuring a safe, healthy environment in all facilities over which it has jurisdiction," Desti Stimes, a spokewoman for the Veterans Administration Medical Center, told the news source. "To this end, we will continue to closely monitor the building where Veterans reside at Messner Homes Inc."
The inspectors will check again in a couple months to ensure that it is in safe conditions.
According to Medline Plus, bed bugs leave itchy, red bumps on the skin in either a cluster or a line. They feed on humans while they are sleeping and hide in their mattresses and other areas in or around the bed at night. Those who suspect they have these little insects may want to purchase mattress covers to trap the bed bugs until professional help arrives.
