Bed bugs have been plaguing homes across the country for the past couple of years, but incidences are starting to slow down as people become aware of these little critters and now how to get rid of them, according to Crain's New York Business.
One of the continual problems though are the subsidized housing buildings, the media outlet reports.
"There is just not enough money to deal with bed bugs effectively at this level of housing," Jody Gangloff-Kaufmann, an urban entomologist, who also was the chairman of the city's Bed Bug Advisory Board, told the news source. "I hate the idea of stigmatizing people who can't afford to deal with this, but it [continues to be] an issue of poverty."
According to the Mayo Clinic, bed bugs are approximately the size of an apple seed, are reddish-brown and flat. They feed off of human blood, and those who are looking to get rid of these little pests may want to purchase a mattress encasement to keep them out and wash and dry their linens in high temperatures, as heat is known to kill them.
