The Danbury Schools Systems in Connecticut recently announced that they are hosting a bed bug education meeting at the local high school to help parents become more aware about bed bugs, according to the Danbury Patch.

There are a number of myths surrounding bed bugs, one of which is that they carry disease, which they do not. However, they do leave itchy, red bumps on the skin. This meeting will tell parents everything they need to look for in case their child brings them home, the media outlet reports.

"They said they'd schedule something in the new year," Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton told the news source. "There is no crisis. There is no epidemic, although that can change."

Bed bugs continue to populate schools, hospitals, motels and nursing homes, as they are able to travel from person to person by latching onto their clothing and luggage. The bed bugs hide in beds, walls, carpets, mattresses and any area surrounding a bed, Medline Plus reports. Those who are attempting to prevent bed bugs may want to purchase mattress covers, which can keep them at bay.
