Bed bugs have been reportedly appearing at Hamilton Avenue School in Greenwich, New York, and school officials have decided to have the place treated during winter vacation, which starts this Friday, according to the Greenwich Patch.
"They've had four isolated incidents," school spokesman Kim Eves told the news source. "They found a dead one at the end of October, give or take [a few days], one last week, one the week before and one a week before that. It's not necessarily a health hazard ... but we're trying not to spread them. It's not a concern in terms of disease."
Parents are asking the officials to be more informative, as news of the plan is only written on the school's website, they did not send a letter home with the students, the media outlet reports.
According to the Mayo Clinic, bed bugs are approximately the size of an apple seed, are reddish brown and flat. They feed on blood, and hide in various crevices around a bed including the mattress, walls and carpets. Those who are trying to prevent bed bugs may want to purchase a mattress encasement in order to keep them at bay.
