In Joliet, Illinois, near Chicago, the Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center recently held their first session of asthma camp, wherein a group of about 30 children between six and thirteen were shown how to best negotiate their allergy and asthma symptoms without having to miss out on the experiences that make up childhood.
"We wanted to show kids that they can play and participate in programs just like their peers," camp coordinator Julie Edwards told the Herald-News. "If they learn what their triggers are and avoid them as much as possible, they can live a full life."
After ensuring the grass was cut short, the asthmatic children were given a series of activities aimed at educating them on how to best deal with their allergies. They were taught how to properly use inhalers, the importance of a good diet and were told about triggers like dust mites and pollen.
You can help your child at home by using a specialized mattress encasements designed to keep allergens from making their way into his box spring. By taking advantage of these allergy mattress covers, your little one can enjoy a night's sleep free of a stuffy nose and itchy eyes.
