A tenant of an apartment building was attempting to light bed bugs on fire when he caused his apartment to catch on fire in Kalamazoo, Michigan, according to the news channel WOOD-TV.
The man was trying to get rid of the bed bugs by chasing them with a cigarette lighter when the fire started in his bedroom. The fire stayed in the room, but the apartment building was evacuated and the bedroom sustained water, fire and smoke damage, the news source reports.
According to Medline Plus, bed bugs hide in various places around a bed including the mattress, crevices in the wall or underneath carpets. In order to prevent bed bugs, individuals can wash and dry their linens in high temperatures, which is known to kill the little insets. If a person suspects that they have bed bugs already, they may want to call professional help as it can be dangerous when dealing with them. Also, they can purchase mattress covers to trap them until help arrives.
